The BMW weather navigation system is only available in Germany for the moment
Somewhere in Germany, a family is unloading themselves from their BMW. The sun is out and there is not a cloud in the sky and they have their BMW to thank for that. Not that BMW can suddenly control the weather, but they have come up with a way to help you control avoiding the bad weather.
Not available in the States or any Chicago BMW dealers yet, German BMW’s are now offered with an optional weather navigation system.
The system, which is displayed on the cars graphic display LCD screen, has the ability to track current precipitation within the area and help navigate drivers away from it. It will also show the current weather at your destination, and the system reloads itself every 15 minutes, in order to keep up with Mother Nature.
Chicago BMW dealers have also announced the “precipitation pattern” system, which will be available (again, only in Germany) in July 2009. This system will give an animated representation of cloud movement for the past hour and a half.
For those of you searching for plane tickets to Germany on another page right now, it could be a little early for such drastic measures. Both systems are compatible with BMW’s ConnectedDrive feature, meaning it would be a no-brainer for them to bring them over to the States. And though no official word has been given about them making an appearance, it would not be such a crazy idea to be seeing these soon at your local Chicago BMW dealership.
While the system is extremely convenient for convertibles (nothing worse than getting caught with the top down when it starts to rain), it will also be helpful for protecting cars from hail storms, and other severe weather that could hurt the car. Mostly, it is another measure by the German auto company to keep its drivers and their passengers safe, out of severe weather’s way.
So while the Germans are being navigated in the direction of beautiful weather, we will continue waiting for the weather navigation system in Chicago BMW stores. But the wait will definitely be worth it, and until then, we will have to continue surviving in crazy Chicago weather. In fact, I’m concerned if we get this feature on our BMWs in Chicago, every Chicago BMW driver would be steered to San Diego.
