Crash tests done by the NHTSA are extremely thorough, especially for the 2011 car year and beyond. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has made some changes that begin more thorough analyses and more comprehensive data collection. Let’s see what makes the 2011 5 series a lineup that has come out of these tests with shining colors.
What has been changed a bit is the star rating that a vehicle can receive based on how well, or poorly, it does in each of the NHTSA’s tests. For 2010 and older vehicles, including pre-owned Chicago X5 models, a four-star rating was the top accolade, but now the revised Five-Star Safety Ratings System gives only a five-star rating those vehicles that blow safety standards out of the water. Lucky for Patrick BMW, the 2011 5 series sedan found on their lot is one 2011 model year lineup that received the five-star rating. Only one other auto company has a model thus far that has received a 5-star stamp of approval.
An area that makes the newest 5 series a top safety option is the most technologically advanced crash avoidance systems that lineup now comes fitted with. For starters, it comes standard with Electronic Stability Control. This system helps reduce the loss of control the vehicle can undergo at any time, based on driving conditions, other autos on the roadway, etc. The ESC lessens skidding by applying the brakes to the needed wheels. For example, if the ESC detects that the BMW is undergoing under steering, it’ll apply braking to the inner rear wheel. This helps keep you safe in times when your auto is not driving as stable as it should be.
The 2011 5 series also has the option of other safety systems to protect passengers and driver. For example, the anto-whiplash front head restraints are a lifesaver if you unfortunately suffer an accident. The power adjustable front head restraints also provide top notch protection. Brake assist, front impact airbags, and traction control are other vital safety features found on the 2011 5 series.
If you are shopping for an older, used for sale BMW Chicago model, the safety features may vary, depending on the year of manufacture. Check with your knowledgeable BMW sales staff for any safety feature questions- they’ll get you the answers you need.
