BMW Named One of Greenest Automakers

Does it seem kind of strange to see BMW and green auto in the same phrase?  Many people, including myself, think of other automakers such as Toyota (with their Prius Hybrid), as being more of a “green” automaker.  Let me explain how this works and how this luxury car giant received this title for the fifth straight year.

This honor is fueled by the Dow Jones Sustainability Index.  The DJSI was created back in 1999 and it globally tracks the financial performances of the “leading sustainability-driven companies worldwide”.  This designation gives drivers an even better reason to head to their Chicago BMW dealer. New BMW X6 Hybrid

How do you make a great car better?  Go greener.  As if the BMW X6 weren’t sexy enough, they’re making it greener than ever with the addition of BMW’s hybrid petrol-electric technology.  But the big question is, “How do you make a car greener without sacrificing performance?”  Well, in most cases this would be a valid argument.  After all, most hybrid vehicles on the road today are meant specifically for the objective of increasing mph rather than being able to make tight turns and accelerate to top speeds.  But what would a BMW be without its impeccable handling and acceleration? The BMW weather nagivation system is only available in Germany for the moment

The BMW weather navigation system is only available in Germany for the moment

Somewhere in Germany, a family is unloading themselves from their BMW. The sun is out and there is not a cloud in the sky and they have their BMW to thank for that. Not that BMW can suddenly control the weather, but they have come up with a way to help you control avoiding the bad weather.

Not available in the States or any Chicago BMW dealers yet, German BMW’s are now offered with an optional weather navigation system.

Chicago BMW news: Regenerative brakes coming to U.S.

For the 2008 M3 European model, BMW installed a regenerative braking system.  While the M3 certainly would not be considered a “green car” by today’s standards, it did implement this technology indicative of green cars.

From the 2008 BMW M3 press release:

Intelligent energy management featuring Brake Energy Regeneration likewise serves to further enhance the efficiency of the V8 power unit in the new BMW M3. In this case the power required for the on-board network is generated specifically during overrun and during application of the brakes, serving to charge the car’s battery at exactly the right time
