128i Convertible's functional soft-top
After test driving the recently released Chicago BMW 1-Series rag-top convertible, an eye popping experience I might add, it is evident that sports car enthusiasts have finally encountered an attractive compromise that fits appropriately between basic roadsters, comfortable cruisers, and the pricier retractable hardtops offered by Chicago BMW dealers; establishing its proper place within the lineup. It is one thing to hop inside any sports car and accelerate away, but it is an entirely different and thrilling happening altogether to do so in a BMW; that is exactly what Chicago BMW dealers are offering with the 128i convertible model.
The first thing that originally stood out to me was how quiet the Chicago BMW 128i was with the top down, even at speeds of up to 80 mph; it handled wind noise much better than other convertibles recently sampled. Furthermore, when Mother Nature decides against cooperating with one’s warm weather desires, drivers will rave about the automobile’s cloth top, as it is easy to use and completely stylish. While the 128i does not share the 135i’s twin-turbo straight six, the engine still sounds outstanding, almost daring you to keep the revs high.
Not to be outdone, the six-speed stick is just as competent as its counterpart, too. The six-speed manual transmission provides an alarmingly sleek ride. It is worth noting that 1-series gearboxes are considerably more responsive than other BMW boxes we have shifted, though we have not driven a 3-series recently. The movement is nice and slick, without any annoying slop.
The 128i convertible is ideal for a two-person cruise. While it is true there are a plethora of convertibles on the market capable of faster speeds (for those with lead feet), including the Chicago BMW 135i, the 128i does a wonderful job of fusing practicality, speed, and price together. Drop the top, sit back and shift through the gears. The Chicago BMW in-line six sounds superb, and with 230 hp, has bountiful kick. Starting at just $34,000, an incredibly affordable price for such luxury performance convertible, it is well worth the cash for those who like to drive and love to drive topless.
